Abigail Booth’s works manifest a rich material language rooted in her relationship to the natural world, unravelling ideas of anxiety, loss, and preservation in the face of environmental and societal collapse. These limited-edition prints of an unidentified jawbone and the linear abrasions of retreating ice etched into bedrock, draw on the unfulfilled prophecies of the Brahan Seer to conjure portents of omnipresent environmental threats encountered during her residency in the Cairngorms. Hand-printed using inks made from burnt bone and juniper, Booth references traditional practices of purification, invoking clairvoyance and acts of reciprocity that give back to the land. Her material language reflects an intimate knowledge of plants and place, as she grapples with humanity’s contradictory capacity for harm and its enduring desire for healing.
